Indian Music:The divine ashes????

First posted by me on Aneeshji’s blog as a comment to his “DJ Divine” article…

I am just back from visiting the Kullu dassera, the folk extravagnza, that was part of my usual weekend tours that I try to undergo when I am to receive and know more about
Indian Music .This is the only duration when I am away from my riyaaz.During the trip I also visited Dharmshala (Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts)and North most part of Himachal Pradesh(i.e.Lahoul & Spiti ),thinking that the area and its ambience would teach me w.r.t. the rusticness and the ancient folk culture of India.

I have been in Delhi for almost 6months now and been transferred from Pune, where I regularly used to visit “Sawai Gandharva Music Festival” and other musical mehfills taking places.

In those mehfills I used to listen to great performers talking very highly about Pune’s very keen and observant audiences, and used to say that these people(the audience of Pune) is the major factor to bridge the gap between old and new generation of classical music or in other way to sustain the culture of Indian classical music.
Those days I being in Pune , was a little surprised to understand that how could such a vast and deep culture of Indian classical music ,according to these people is vanishing gradually? Then started my quest for the exploration of more music and incidently happen to come to Delhi.

While roaming in Cannought Place (The Bookwirm book store to be precise),I found a book titled “India’s lost music”-that talked literally about the demise of Indian classical music giving some snapshots of the great masters like Ustd. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Sahab,Pdt.Mallikarjun Manoor Ji,Pdt.Omkarnath Thakur Ji ,Roshanara begum ji,Pandita Saraswati baai Rane and many other respected exponents of Indian classical music of the era earlier than 1960s.Does west really think that Indian classical music is dead,or do we think except Punekars,Banaraswallas and Mumbai & Delhiites??

While attending a concert of Pdt.Bhajan Sopori ji in Delhi ,when he asked audience about the farmaish (by this time he has already finished raagas Gawati & Bageshri ),then one of the front seaters said very enthusiastically(yes enthusiastically as the fellow seemed to enjoy the show till then very much ) “Panditji Bhairavi ho jaye”.
On the other occasion another audience said “Panditji Jan Gan Man bajaiye”.

Well todays generation (of which I am also a part of),seems to be drifting away with whatever has been shown by the media. It really hurts when the folk dances and music is also biased with the tunes of Reshmiya and Malik’s songs.Enchanting of stotras and artis are composed with bollywood’s tunes,on Ganesh or navratri prosessions there is always a race w.r.t. the loud speaker’s decibel levels and mostly everywhere one can listen to “Kaala Kouwa Kaat Khayega” and songs like this on which people are dancing to the limitless.

I believe that media has to take the responsibilty to preserve and broadcast some good stuff to the youth ,if doordarshan or AIR needs a sponsorship then Indian corporate circle has to come forward or the advertising has to be done accordingly by the responsible intellectual media personalities of our country.

At last being a learner of Indian classical music, I can only say that this is the high time to preserve the music of south asia in the form of Ghazals(those old sonorous from Great Mehdi Hassan which used to be composed on some or the other raag only ),folk music and Indian Classical Music-the core ,I would say .

The classical music is definitley not gone and cannot die also ,but we need to aggressively carry out a crisp plan so that we can give the Indian Classical Music its due.We the youth are ready to implement the path shown by our Gurujans to the ultimate.

Rudra hoon vish chod ,madhu ki kaamna main kyon karoonga,
Hai amit samrthya mujhme, yaachna main kyon karoonga

Baajaa, Gaajaa and Backpack

My Guruji has launched one book that is the first in the series of how to teach students between the age of 8 to 15 about learning the musical instruments. Was ably supported by Anand Hirvey through sketches and images.
Have a glimpse of some of the snapshots.

My dear friend Ameya has written something on me as a traveller.Yuppy 🙂

He knows the best,
Who imagines a wide road ahead,

To walk, walk and walk…..

No waiting and looking back,
Go with the vigor, to surpass,
Miles that come ahead of him…

He rather smiles in those exerts,
Sweating, pushing and,

Sometimes feeling too little cold…..

Up he sees the sky, and,
Down the inspiring motherland,

Inviting him to move one step ahead…

This happens always,
Because of his initiation and love,

Seeing in beauty of infiniteness….

He adorns, react & feels great,
Talking to little aspect he touches,

Believing within them a uniqueness….

He is a performer & experimental,
However far he may go and reach,

He likes to be called a traveller…..

Need some artistic and enthusiastic people

I need some peeple who can sit with me for some time(a few hours/a few days) and discuss the creativity and expressions.
There are currently three projects in hand with “Rhythm Seven -a Goa,Pune/Mumbai based Music-Art related organisation”.

A.Already published book to be made into movie or animation for children. The book is a tutorial for the musical instrument for children below the age of 15.
Needs–Dreamweaver,Flash,Python/Perl scripts,Photoshop etc.

B.Needs artistic imagination in painting and drawing/sketches for a to be published book of Poetry in hindi .Colours are to be important in the designs and each expression will be associated with a theme in the context.
Needs–Pencil sketches,colour drawings etc.

C.Design of a ART related website based on Open Source templates/software with the integration of e-commerce

Credit will be given to the designers and compensation can be negotiated.
There are many more projects in the pipeline and the above 3 pilot projects can decide the future course of actions 🙂

The assignment is best defined as The collection of explorations in creativity. In this concept I refuse to limit myself to one line of thought, one tool, one idea, one medium. Yes, it is about music, painting, drawing, writing, thinking, video, animation ,sketches and the list goes on.

The practical side has been possible for me because of the use of open source tools. In these days of digitized communication, publicity and working tools, it has become virtually impossible for regular working people without a high income, to get the necessary software, at least legally. I share the open source ideal of giving everyone the chance to learn, and to be creative. Therefore I’ve decided to use as much as much open source tools as I can, to give my projects a chance .

  • To inspire other people to use open source tools because they really give you many more possibilities
  • Earn and share money.
  • Expressing ourselves with monetary expectations.

Death of the classical music industry

Go through the link…..

I am going to check out the credentials of the people who wrote it.

(Arati Menon Carroll & Shobhana Subramanian)
It is high time these writers and journalists get warned and should write anything after atleast doing some kind of homework or keep there opinion with themselves.

Anurag’s Comment on the same:

Manyawar, Namaskar

It is INDEED a fact that Classical Music is DEAD today. I am sorry to say so BUT it is the basic fact that we need to realize. Todays, new-coming so-called classical experts don’t know even what is the basic purpose of Classical Music. Why was it made? What is the real power of classical music and also what is the basic target of claasical music. I am NOT any great Classical Music expert but I got this very fact when while my in-depth research work on Music Therapy.

Do you know about Music Therapy? You will be amazed to know that the great experts of Classical Music from ITC SRA Kolkata DO NOT know any thing about Music Therapy!!!!!!!
They say it is beyond their understanding!!!!!!

If you make an in-depth study of Music Therapy, you will agree with me…..

My Reply for Anurag’s post:

Hello Friend,

First of all I would like to thank you for the scrap ,for pro-actively raising the issue –infact a very important issue and throwing out the question to a fellow researcher of Indian Classical Music and Performing Arts in India.

1.Classical Music is not dead and indeed never would be. There are abundance of young classical musicians coming up who are disciplined, are sincere ,creative and are more talented then there were students in any generation.

And yeah I have the data to support this that I Would love to share with you in future course of time.

This has also been my observation for the last 20 years (FYI, I am into learning , teaching and performing classical Music for the last 20 years). For the same fortunately I have been involved in classical music circles in Goa(1 year), was in Pune(3 years),Mumbai(2 years),Delhi (2 years),Bengaluru(2 years),Kolkata( 1 year), and Madhya Pradesh(7 years) and have found that Classical Music exponents , listeners are at a all time high, the only grey part is that externally the people are not coming to understand and realize this and the major reason for this is less coverage given by the media, newspapers ,television and radio .

You call it Vocal Classical- there are plenty of finer students and performers who are achieving higher goals (plenty of them-numerous),instrumentalists in every field sitar, tabla, sarod, santoor from cities like Pune,Delhi,Kolkata,Mumbai,Chennai.Hyderabad and others also.

The new generation is very creative, innovative ,energetic and aware because of the plenty of resources coming for their aid like music softwares, internet, orkut, youtubes, websites and systems etc.

2.The basic purpose of music was never known to anyone.Infact no body even knew that who and how was the classical music created. There have been plenty of schools of thoughts that suggests that Lord Shiva created the music, and some scriptures tell that Lord Ganesha was the creator .Samveda also talks about the origin of the music and considering the Bharat’s Natyshastra’s and Sangeet Ratnakara’s definition –“Ranjayati Iti raag”, means “That which entertains is music”.

Then there were the origins of the different categories of the music – like Kawwali,Dhrupad,Khayal,Bhajans,Thumri,Tappa etc(historically in the same sequence).

In Hindu mythology it is said that : Shiva produced the Khayal style,Krishna gave raise to Semi classical tradition,Hanuman started Dhrupad and Ganesha with the instrumental music.

Again in some realistc sense the history of Classical Music goes back to the vedic period(what is that and how long is that is again a matter of debate).

3.And if you think that if someone is unaware of Classical Music Therapy then he is ignorant about the basic purpose of classical music then friend you are stuck.

To enjoy, practice and play with classical music I don’t think that you must be taught about how and why it is made(the answer of which is known to on-one ).It Is recommended and but definitely not essential or a must.

Yep,healing is just one of the effects of the Indian Classical Music and nothing else, and this is again a topic for much debate, because the medicine for a specific person may not be suitable for the other.

For me a solving a mathematical puzzle would be a great pain reliever than taking a Pain Killer or listening to a hamsadhvani .

Again for that matter every subject will have its own healing effects and that is the reason there are so many therapies in resence:Reiki,Radiosonic,Telepathy,Unani,Ayurvedic,Homoeopathic,Biochemic,Acupuncture,Acupressure and Astrology as well and so on.

If you are using the Music as therapy then it is better till the patient is practicing it himself rather than listening to it because in the second case it will be merely similar to the other therapies mentioned above.

I would always abstain from all the above therapies in which one has to depend upon the external resources and music therapy of the second type also comes into the same category.

I am writing about the musical therapy after understanding the same and always categorically say that any kind of process of curing oneself should be applied by oneself and by not applying any external forces or the mediums.

4.At last I would say that you seem to be a bit negative with a wrong reason that people don’t know about the Indian Classical Music Therapy therefore they are zero in it .I would say that it is trivial as the gigantic musical tradition has created a just smaller application out of itself.

And Indian Classical will grow and more so in near future once it is realized that media and other agents have to play some more active role for the same.

My heart is beating like a drum

…Rudra hun Vish chhod Madhu ki kaamna main kyu karunga…

…Hai amit Samarthya mujhme, Yachna main kyu karunga…

Ready for the football match with the TSPG.Now a days my heart is beating like a
drum-rocking riyaaz, thrilling practise for the football, football world cup ,hockey world cup,now cricket and polling for the world cup ,eating -drinking and bathing in music, has left me with no time for snooker , table tennis and gym.

How long I have come forward, when I look back to those very different days of hasinas(poetry),naginas(astrology) pudinas (homoeopathy) and pashminas(THE TRAVEL BUG).That serendipity was really awesome and nostalgic.

These lines very much show my condition…RYZING TO THE HILT…

Kitne Mahine hue Baag me Koyal Ku-ku karti thi
Kitne Mahine hue Zameen se Saundhi Khushbu uthti thi

Kitne Mahine hue Kacche Aam ki Khataas me khoye hue
Kitne Mahine hue Niboli kachchi Tap-tap girti thi

Kitne Mahine hue Sardi me Maa jo Oon bunti thi
Kitne Mahine hue Subah ki pahli Dhoop bikharti thi

Kitne Mahine hue Naa aayi Daakiye ki Cycle purani si
Kitne Mahine hue Vo Saankal khad-khad khad-khad bajti thi

Kitne Mahine hue Hawa me Rupaiyya udaya karte the
Kitne Mahine hue Chavanni Hafte-Hafte chalti thi…

Kitne Mahine hue kitabon me Khushboo talasha karte the
Kitne Mahine hue Sugandhi Swed se utha karti thi…

Kitne Mahine hue Safar me dost banaya karte the
Kitne Mahine hue Vo Bus me dhakka mukki hoti thi…

Aaj vo din hai… Mangal-Chand pe jana sambhav hai
Kitne Mahine hue Vo Ret ke Ghar me Gudia soti thi…

Aaj vo Din hai… Zindagi aur Fursat ki Rassa-kashi
Kitne Mahine hue zindagi sath me baith ke hansti thi

Aaj vo Din hai… unche Dumahle aur Neend ka naam nahi
Kitne Mahine hue vo Maa ki god me Palke mundti thi…

Aaj vo Din hai… ab to kisika Naam bhi lena yaad nahi,
Kitne Mahine hue ki Shaame sath me beeta karti thee…

Aaj vo Din hai… Ab na samjhe Maut-Zindagi ka antar…
Kitne Mahine hue… Vo Zindagi Roz Jilaayaa karti thi……

Bhatiyaar and Bhairavi in the academy

The day was the beginning of a new week in Delhi.
It was 6AM in the morning and the raag was Bhatiyaar, which for ages I’ve only heared about, but never listened to in any of the live performances.
The reason would have been that not many concerts are taking place now a days in the morning as early as 5AM ,the time at which it is usually sung.

My association with Aneeshji has been very recent but it seems that it has been for ages that I knew him,as a person and as a mentor.
Not only him but also his troup ,it seems has been associated with me.The gesture and companionship they did show towards me was really enthralling.
Sudhir ji has a long relationship with Goa(his gurus Pdt.Tulsidas Borkar and Pdt. Jitendra Abhishki Bua are both from Goa).Goa is the place where I learned and inculcated the passion about the music.

The one very intersting fact I have observed is that ,I planned to become a good musician under Aneeshji’s tutelage but now end up starting to learn to become a
good human being, after all that is the most important objective of one’s life , above all success and achievements ,isn’t it?

Met “Sudev Sheth” in the concert ,who is doing his graduation in University of California-Berkeley in “Political Science & South Asian Music”.Sudev is also learning under Aneeshji and
could found in him a very humble ,keen student of music. He has come to Delhi as an exchange program and to study about the Indian Music in Delhi and it’s developement in the last couple of centuries.Pretty nice research topic .

Lalit Kala Academi Studio in Garhi east Of Kailash was filled with the overwhelming presence of ART enthusiasts.
The students, professors, professionals mostly of whom were bengalis because the program was organised in the memory of late “Sankho Choudhury”.

The mehfil ended with the Bhairavi raag and bhajan in the same raag. The chirpings of birds, and white colour of curtains was creating a divine and peaceful environment. It was an open space
surrounded by the hostel ,a garden ,maidan and sculptures and paintings made by the fellow students of the academy.Inspired to learn and devote my carnal body to the development of Music.

Saraswati Poojan in the land of Parshuram

India is performing badly in the World cup hockey. My heart is dissatisfied.Didn’t apply feets on the football either due to various reasons.First the big party, then “drama” and on the last day preponing of the schedule for the “Stingray” understanding. The accidental death of crocodile hunter was a blow for the adventure freaks like me .

But believe me ,the life is rocking at the Music front.Inspired by Spicmacay’s programs and my “To be program” on 31st/1st/2nd ,I did buy a Lehara Machine from Radel India. After purchasing a Digital Tambora for Taai (the Raagini one ),this is one of the best investments I must’ve made in my career. From here one thing is pretty sure,I have only to look forward ,as the sky is the limit.

Saraswati Puja is getting closer, and most of my time is being spent on deciding the strategy for the big event. My index finger is getting stronger day by day ,after getting damaged saving a goal, this is the best I could expect. The throat of Ameya is also recovering from the infection as too the one of Tanay .
